Guntur with a population of approx. 800 000 is the third largest city in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and is located southwest of Vijayawada which lies across the Krishna River. Guntur is probably most renowned for the red hot chilli varieties grown in the surrounding region, in fact the city boasts of Asia's largest chilli yard. Chilli, cotton and tobacco are major commodities processed and exported from Guntur. Guntur does not have an airport of its own but Vijayawada Int'l Airport (VOBZ) serving Vijayawada is located approx. 50 kms by road from Guntur.
