The river Ganges is the epicentre of Indian Civilisation. It originates at the Gomukh from the Gangotri glaciers of Himalaya, located in UttaraKashi district in the state of Uttarakhand in India. The river Ganges also known as The Ganga transcends 2700 km from the Himalaya mountains through the plains of north and East India and Bangladesh to finally merge into the GangaSagar confluence in Bay of Bengal in West Bengal. Ganga is the most sacred river for Hindus in the Indian Subcontinent. In Hindu mythology, river Ganga is a Goddess, daughter of mighty Himavat, King of Himalayas. Kumbha Mela ritual which dates back to time immemorial is held every three years. About a 100 million Hindu pilgrims from all over gather in these cities and perform a ritual bathing in the river with a belief to wash away sins and purify their body and soul. Another famous ritual is the Ganga Aarti. Devotees and priests perform Aarti during twilight everyday as an offering of gratitude to the river by lighting Diyas, lamps and chanting prayers.
