@Nixon and His Aides Discuss the Pentagon Spies December 21 1971
An unjustly unknown, or little known, moment in American history and the Nixon administration. The President meets with his top aides to deal with an astonishing revelation: the Joint Chiefs of Staff, feeling excluded from policy making and oversight, have had their liaison to the National Security Council steal documents - sometimes from Henry Kissinger's briefcase - and pass them on to the Pentagon. Audio quality is very, very poor, with many sections that must be labeled as "inaudible". The extraordinary efforts put into trying to rescue the erased eighteen and a half minutes of Watergate tape (which is too often misrepresented as a possible Rosetta stone for the scandal) must be contrasted with the utter neglect of tapes like these, where the audio could no doubt be improved immeasurably given the technology now available, a small achievement of great value to historians and well within the realm of feasibility. Thanks to the overwhelming indifference to the past, this important session is now abandoned to the apocalypse of noise. Audio file can be found at (audio used here runs from 2:57-49:45): http://nixontapeaudio.org/welander/639-030b.mp3 Transcript by Douglas Brinkley, Luke Nichter, James Rosen, Len Colodny, with some additions and edits by the uploader. Transcript is on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/TfqrBXq6 Original transcript of the meeting, without the material of Brinkley, Nichter, and the uploader is here: http://www.watergate.com/content/militaryspyring/transcript.pdf Among the articles on this obscure historical incident, from varying ideological viewpoints, are the following: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/print/2002/04/nixon-and-the-chiefs/302473/ http://www.counterpunch.org/2001/01/07/the-nixon-story-you-never-heard/ http://nixontapes.org/welander.html One very well thought out inference on the eighteen and a half minute tape gap is by Max Holland: http://www.washingtondecoded.com/site/2014/05/robenalt.html
