A meeting between Nixon and Ehrlichman where the president obsesses again over his vulnerabilities in the Watergate scandal and how to counter them. They go over what John Dean might tell prosecutors, with particular focus given to the March 21 "Cancer on the Presidency" meeting. Both Dean and the counsel for the re-election committee, Paul O'Brien, have told Ehrlichman that a large circle of people were involved in the scandal and the cover-up, including Attorney General John Mitchell, Mitchell's close friend Fred LaRue, and the head of the re-election committee, Jeb Magruder. Ehrlichman alleges that Dean has been acting for a long time to protect Mitchell, and this has cost them all. "Do you know what we're doing?" he quotes Haldeman, "We're saving Mitchell's ass." Perhaps the most interesting moment is when Ehrlichman admits knowledge of the operation at Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist: "The way that project was finally represented to me was that it was a covert look at some files, which could be read to be that they walked in when the nurse wasn't looking and they flipped through the file." Then: "It wasn't until much later that we learned that they had actually conducted a burglary."
