King Johns Bridge This bridge spanning the River Griffeen is proudly acclaimed to be the oldest standing stone bridge in Ireland. It is clearly marked on John Rocque's map of 1760 as 'King John's Bridge'. It was commissioned by King John during his reign, placing its construction between 1199-1216, making it some 800 years old. At the time Esker was part of a demesne in the Liffey valley organized under King John as a Royal Manor. King John was renowned for building roads and bridges and is often known as the 'Bridge-minded Monarch! The medieval London Bridge was also completed during his reign. The bridge would have been part of an important roadway from Dublin to Lucan via Ballyfermot. The stonework and construction is described as being of high quality and probably involved the skills of a master craftsman. The Bridge is a protected structure (recorded monument) under the South Dublin County Development Plan. Only one central arch of the original three arches of equal span remains. The bridge probably fell into disuse between 1760 and the early to mid 1800's due to re-alignment of the main road northwards, as depicted on maps by Taylor (1816) and Duncan (1821). The 6" Ordnance Survey mapping of 1837-42 shows Esker bridge has been constructed to the north.
