He is worshipped as the God of knowledge and wisdom, with a human body and a horse's head, brilliant white in color, with white garments and seated on a white lotus. Hayagriva is celebrated in the Puranas for rescuing the Vedas from the demons Madhu and Kaitabha and teaching them again to Brahma. Symbolically, the story of Hayagriva represents the triumph of pure knowledge, guided by the hand of God, over the demonic forces of passion and darkness. SriHayagriva is male equivalent to Mata Saraswati. He is Lord Vishnu whose blessings make us, intelligent and wise. Hayagriva means Horse headed. It is said Lord Narayana assumed this form to kill two demons who were blessed by Lord Bramha not to be killed by any human being but horse headed man. These demons had stolen sacred vedas during Samudra manthan. Like Narsimha avatar, Lord Vishnu took this form and killed these demons. He then then gave knowledge of Vedas to Brahma and Saraswati.
