In May 2014 Larrakia protesters and defenders of Larrakia land rights gathered at Totem Road in Coconut Grove, Darwin, to stop machinery clearing land on a 301ha lease won by Larrakia in the land rights struggle of the 1970s. The land is part of a documented Aboriginal cemetery. Helen Secretary and her family, claimed to be the "owners" of the land under Northern Territory law and asked police to evict other Larrakia and protesters from the land. The police appear to refer to ancient British enclosure law, that the land was fenced with No Tresspassing signs on the gate. Others preparing evidence for a heritage nomination of the land have also been issued with trespassing notices, This is what it has come to in Darwin, that one family can take possession of 301haof land in suburban Darwin by simply amending the constitution of an incorporated association that holds the lease, despite years of struggle by Larrakia and others to win back the land for all Larrakia and the community in general.
