kulaluk1971's video: Please come back Len Stewart @ Kulaluk 1998

@"Please come back" Len Stewart @ Kulaluk 1998
After finishing a year's fieldwork with homeless Aboriginal people in Darwin in 1997, the anthropologist returns to the University of Western Australia to write his PhD thesis, "Fringe dwellers in Darwin: cultural continuities or a culture of resistance?" Leaving behind friends made during field work is difficult, and in this video-message to the anthropologist, two men appeal for their friend, Bill Day to "come back to Darwin". The message was recorded on 15 April, 1998, by filmmaker, Stella Simmering, aka Stella Smith, at a beachside camp on the Kulaluk lease under the flight path of the Darwin International Airport. The older man, from Maningrida, is since deceased. Len Stewart still lives in Darwin. Dr Bill Day lives in Perth, WA, where he continues the struggle to save the 301ha Kulaluk lease.
