L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a charming Provencal town 25km southeast of Avignon. It is located near the town of Fontaine de Vaucluse. The majestic River Sorgue runs through the beautiful L'Isle sur la Sorgue town. At L’Isle sur la the Sorgue, the river forks, forming two 'arms' and embracing the Isle that takes its name. The name literally means “the island on the Sorgue River; The numerous canals and branches of the Sorgue have given the town the nickname of the Venice of the Comtat.   L'Isle sur la Sorgue is the European antiques capital. It is the home of many antique and second-hand goods dealers. The town hosts antique markets on most Sundays. The International Antiques Fair takes place twice a year, at Easter and in August, L'Isle sur la Sorgue is also home many galleries and exhibitions. It has many waterside cafés and restaurants, all within walking distance of each other. Its many attractive water wheels throughout the town are still in working order. Water wheels are a distinctive feature of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Isle-Sorgue water wheels were an important source of industrial power in the 18th century. With the fast flowing water of the Sorgue River as its power source, the water wheels drove industrial activities, like wheat and flour milling, wool spinning and weaving and paper milling, in the Sorgue River communities (Payes des Sorgues). There still remains about 15 picturesque old wooden water wheels in the town. These days the wheels are left for decorative purposes but they are nevertheless an impressive sight. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue has a population of 20,000.
