Kiki Smith: Procession Sara Hildén Art Museum (Sara Hildénin taidemuseo) in Tampere, South Finland 9.2.2019 - 12.5.2019 Sara Hildénin taidemuseon Procession-näyttely 9.2.–12.5.2019 oli taiteilija Kiki Smithin ensimmäinen laaja retrospektiivi Euroopassa. The Sara Hildén Art Museum of Tampere presented Kiki Smith’s first large-scale retrospective exibition in Europe. The exhibition took place from February 9 to May 12, 2019. Kiki Smith is a West German-born American artist best known for her figural representations of birth, regeneration, mortality, abjection, and sexuality. She is a pioneer of contemporary sculpture and one of the most outstanding artists of our time. Kiki Smith is known for working with many different materials; glass, plaster, ceramic and bronze as well as paint, embroidery, printing and various textile techniques. The exhibition was a glimpse into the spectrum of the New York-based artist’s diverse practice, tracing its development through her career up to the present. A major focus was placed on her sculpture from the beginnings in the 1980s to the present day. The exhibition, the first large-scale retrospective of the artist’s work in Europe, was curated by Petra Giloy-Hirtz and organized by Haus der Kunst, Munich, where it was first seen in spring 2018 and adapted by the Sara Hildén Art Museum in collaboration with the artist and the curator. https://www.sarahildenintaidemuseo.fi/en/exhibition/kiki-smith/ Our visit to the exhibition was accompanied by ”laskiaispulla ja kahvi” at lovely Café Sara, which is located downstaris in the museum building. The Sara Hildén Art Museum museum is situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Näsijärvi in Tampere, South Finland. The museum is located next to to the Näsinneula observation tower (Näsinneulan näkötorni) and the Särkänniemi amusement park (Särkänniemek huvipuisto). The museum building was designed by Pekka Ilveskoski Architects. It opened in 1979 at the same time as the sculpture park that surrounds it. The Sara Hildén Art Museum focuses on international modernism and contemporary art. The museum, maintained by the City of Tampere, is the permanent home of the collection of the Sara Hildén Foundation, which was founded in 1962. The foundation’s collection has more than 5 000 works of modern and contemporary art, including works by Joan Miró, Francis Bacon, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti. Among the latest works to have been acquired are pieces by Kiki Smith and Marcel Dzama. Finnish modern and contemporary art is represented by a wide range of works by some of Finland’s most renowned artists. Sara (Saara) Ester Hildén (1905–1993) was a Finnish businesswoman and art collector. She developed an interest in contemporary art. In the 1950s, Sara Hildén established successful fashion shops in the cities of Tampere and Lahti in Finland. In 1961 she was able to build an outstanding collection of contemporary Finnish art which was expanded over the years to include items from the world's top international artists. In 1962, it became the basis of the Sara Hildén Foundation.
