@LYFTKRAFT 5000 KG Crane | Lift Power of Gothenburg (Göteborg) Port on Hisingen Island, West Sweden
Gothenburg really lifted me up (video 2019). On one of my Gothenburg explorations I met this cute little crane at Lundby Hamngata street in Lundbyhamnen (Lundby port), on Hisingen. The LYFTKRAFT 5000 KG text indicates that crane’s lift power was 5.000 kg (11.000 lb). My walk continued from Lundyhamnen to Kvillepiren (Quill pier), where old harbor loading ramps still remain. The old shipbuilding industry and port operations with piers, cranes and hangars created Gothenburg its historical and unique urban environment by the Göta Älv river. As the northern Göta Älv riverbank has been transformed from a shipyard to a residential area, the old cranes have been unfortunately dismantled one by one. At most there were 194 harbor cranes. Now only a few remain. The heavy cranes that once served the shipbuilding industry have formed Gothenburg's characteristic and iconic skyline, and its identity. Today, even some of the largest cranes have been demolished. The future of the remaing shipyard cranes is highly uncertain. The cranes have suffered from a lack of maintenance. The large Eriksberg Crane (Eriksbergskranen) of the former Eriksberg shipyard is a full gantry crane in the Eriksberg district. It is a listed building, and is considered to be one of the Gothenburg’s main landmarks and an important relic of its industrial and maritime heritage. The municipally-owned Port of Gothenburg (Göteborgs hamn) is the largest port in the Nordic countries. As the only Swedish port with the capacity to cope with the very largest modern, ocean-going container ships, Gothenburg handles nearly 30% of the country's foreign trade. The Port of Gothenburg is divided into a number of sections or harbors. The port is situated on both sides of the estuary of the Göta älv river. The north shore, Norra Älvstranden, is on Hisingen island and the south shore, Södra Älvstranden, is on the mainland. It is a combined river and coastal port and the total length of the dock is 13.1 km (8.1 mi). The post-war period at the Port of Gothenburg was characterised by further expansion on Hisingen. The first of the new port areas was Lundbyhamnen (Lundby port), which was officially opened in 1951. At the time it was a modern dry cargo harbor, complete with balconies on the storage sheds (allowing goods to be loaded directly onto the different floors) and large quayside areas for freight handling. The harbor was closed in 1989. It has now been transformed into a residential area and a center for education, high-tech enterprises and conferences. The Frihamnen (the free-port) area at Hisingen, just across the Göta älv river from the Gothenburg city center, is characterized by the old ship building industry and port operations. Frihamnen was officially opened in 1922. Frihamnen comprises three piers – Södra Frihamnspiren (Banana pier), Norra Frihamnspiren and Kvillepiren. Frihamnen acquired its name as in the past it was possible to bring goods ashore 'free', which meant that it was not necessary to pay customs duty and VAT before the importer finally took the goods out through the gates. The oldest parts of the Frihamnen harbor date from the 1920s although many sheds and warehouses are much newer. Bananas were unloaded there for many years and after that it was graced exclusively by cruise ships until 2017. Älvstaden, a new residential district, is being built in this area. Jubileumsparken (Jubilee Park) in Frihamnen is the result of the Gothenburg citizens' wishes for green areas, a meeting place for all, and getting closer to the Götä Älv river. Jubileumsparken offers the public paths, which is a pool in the river along Kvillepiren. The public sauna in Jubileumsparken is a spectacular and temporary building made of recycled material. The sauna was built in 2014 by citizens of Gothenburg together with architects from Raumblabor Berlin. In 2024, a new sauna will replace the temporary building. Hisingen is the fifth largest island of Sweden. The Hisingen island was mostly farmland until the 19th century, when industrialization began and companies like Arendalsvarvet, Eriksberg, Götaverken and Lindholmen started operating there. For most of the 20th century, until the shipyard crisis in the 1970s, the island was the focus for Swedish shipbuilding. Hisingen is a river island, formed by the split of the Göta Älv river at Bohus, and is defined to the east and south by the main arm of that river, to the north by the smaller arm (Nordre Älv), and to the west by the Kattegat. The Volvo car manufacturer has its roots on Hisingen; it was there that their first factory was located and the first car, the Volvo ÖV 4, was produced in 1927. Today, the company still has its main office and production facilities on the island. The Volvo Museum is also located nearby. Over the last 20 years, the northern bank of Göta Älv has undergone major expansion. Residential areas, university buildings and high tech industry have largely replaced the shipyards.
