@Haunted History of ~The Nannau Estate in Wales
Nannau is located three miles north of the town of Dolgellau in Wales and has been home to two of the most powerful and influential families in the county for hundreds of years, the Nanneys and the Vaughans. The Mansion house driveway, and Dolgellau to Llanfachreth road is said to have been haunted by a woman's ghost that walked the driveway of the house and crosses the road to reach the park yonder.Murdered by her husband or lover ,who also killed their pet dog. A lofty rock rises up in front of the house. Foel Offrwm has a sinister reputation as a site of human sacrifice during the Druidic 'dark ages'. In those times, victims were thrown from the cliff that overlooks Nannau, as a sacrifice to pagan gods. A little to the west of the house lies a mysterious lake. Llyn Cynwch is a gateway to the Underworld or fairy realm and was once inhabited by a monstrous dragon or AFANC. The creature was killed by a local shepherd and buried above the lake at Camedd Bedd y Wiber (the Grave of the Serpent) — known these days as Foel Cynwch. According to legend, a demonic entity emerges from Llyn Cynwych once a year, crying, 'The hour is come but not the man.' Anyone hearing this is dragged into the lake and drowned. 'Hollow Oak of the Demon'. There is a well-known story about the Derwen Ceubren yr Elyl or the 'Hollow Oak of the Demon'. Hywel Sele, Lord of Nannau and cousin of Owain Glyndivr, was a supporter of Henry VI. In 1402 Glynd*r visited his cousin at Nannau to try to win his support. It seems that Sele's loyalty to the king was absolute. Sele took a walk with GlyndArr in the Deer Park, and was never seen alive again. Forty years later, Sele's skeleton was discovered in the hollow trunk of an old oak that had been struck by lightning and the tree acquired a fearful reputation as being haunted. The Demon Oak of Nannau was the terror of every peasant for miles around until it toppled to the ground in the summer of 1813. A sundial that was indicated on nineteenth-century maps marked where the tree stood, but a pillar against the west wall of the old garden now marks the spot at SH 743 207.Some say Sele's ghost still lingers The crossroads where the Dolgellau to Llanfachreth road crosses the road from the Deer Park to the mansion (SH 744 204)was haunted ground. A woman was seduced by one of the Lords of Nannau and murdered when she became `demanding' (along with her pet dog). Once, her ghost was seen late at night near the crossroads. The ghostly figure wore a long dress and a little dog followed close behind. A curious witness followed the pair until they disappeared by a small stone bridge. The bridge was investigated based on this sighting and the skeletons of a woman and a small dog were discovered. Supernatural Wales By Alvin Nicholas Mules Well on Nannau Estate The seasonal sounds of screaming can be heard in this location, dating back from when a young groom was killed when the horse he was tending panicked and trampled the man to death.
