Ghost of ~Cockington ~ Devon Join me ~in my visit to Cockington today~ An old medieval village. Haunting History of : Cockington ,Torbay , Devon, England "What is this life if, full of care We have not time to stand and stare" The village today has its origins in the Saxon settlement of Devon from the 8th century onward; the pre-Conquest manorial structure was probably established here in the10th century.The village sits somewhat incongruously, right in the heart of urban Torbay, but it stubbornly refuses to to be tainted by modern developments. A church that has probably been around since the 11th century. An old bell, 1653, can be seen in the left hand corner of the church.The Court was the mansion house of the Mallock family, and remains the focal point of the estate. The Cary family owned the court from 1375 to 1654. It was then sold to the Mallock family a family of rich silversmiths from Exeter, who owned it from 1654 to 1932 when they sold the estate to the Torquay Corporation. In contrast to the famous painting of the Laughing Cavalier, a sad-looking one is said to haunt Cockington Court.
