Today, I want to talk about what might be the biggest reason you're not making progress your mindset. I'm talking about this book, Mindset by Carol Dweck. This is a classic in self development, because it talks about the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. In my practice as an organizing consultant for 16 years I have seen a lot of examples of fixed mindset. As this author would explain, fixed mindset means that you believe that you're born with certain talents and abilities and you either have them or you don't. If you believe that you don't then you are in a stagnate place where you're constantly judging yourself and trying to look talented when you're not and you're believing that there's a ceiling of your abilities that you're going to hit and then there's nothing more that you can do beyond that. A growth mindset is adopting the belief that talent is helpful but practice and effort is what really makes people progress. What we see a lot in this book are examples of people who were born with some kind of physical characteristic or ability that was considered talented and they went into a field, and they reached what they believe is the ceiling of their talent where someone over here who's not maybe as innately talented as that person is willing to work harder and practice more and put in more effort, they quickly surpass that person in their accomplishments and their progress. There's one story that really spoke to me which was that Michael Jordan actually got cut from his high school varsity basketball team. Most people think that's really funny now. He certainly didn't think it was funny then. His mother advised him to throw himself into his discipline to get better and he got up at six o'clock in the morning to go into school early and practice before everyone else. He worked before everyone else, after everyone else. He practiced for hours and hours, his shots and he put in the effort. He worked so hard and got that muscle memory down and practiced enough to where he surpassed everyone else. Even though some of them were just as tall as he was, he did better because he was willing to put in the effort. Look at where he is now. I think people are surprised about that story because they just had this idea that he was born the best basketball player in the world and that's all there was to it. No, he had a growth mindset and he believed that he could push through the perceived barriers of the plateaus that he was reaching with his skills. We need to apply this in all areas of our lives. I have heard so many people say, I just wasn't born organized and you were, and I just don't think that way or my brain doesn't work that way. I've heard so many limiting, fixed mindset beliefs that are keeping people stuck right where they are, where if they adopt a growth mindset and realize that these are skills that can be learned and practiced and you can put effort towards them and you can change it if you want to. Stop saying those things that limit you and start believing that you can add those skills if you want to and if you want to put in the work. I really enjoy thinking this way and hopefully opening other people's eyes to thinking this way because I'm constantly teaching myself things and I love to learn new skills. I wasn't born a musician but I taught myself how to play the ukulele and I've taught myself lots of things, because I've always believed in a growth mindset. Now you know what it's called. Think about how this might apply to your life and If you would like some help in this area with organizing, adopt the growth mindset, decide that you can learn it and then come in and get help from our team.
