maniacfilms's video: A Common Sense of Place

@A Common Sense of Place
Maniac Films have been working with Martin Cassini from http://www.equalitystreets.com to create this film for the Isle of Man Government. The film was commissioned to demonstrate the ideas and advantages of create a shared space environment and will play a part in discussions of the refurbishment of Douglas Promomenade. Below are the key points as described by the Isle Of Man Department for Instrastructure: Some of the modern design concepts being considered for the refurbishment of Douglas Promenade are highlighted in a video produced on behalf of the Department of Infrastructure. The short film explains the many benefits that can be achieved by adopting a more progressive and inclusive approach to street design that reconciles people, places and traffic. Ben Hamilton-Baillie, a respected UK urban design specialist, says in the commentary: ‘The problem many towns suffer is that in trying to accommodate traffic they’ve allowed streets to become so heavily dominated by vehicles those streets have lost their primary purpose as places that attract people, investment and spending.’ Mr Hamilton-Baillie notes that a more integrated design, balancing the needs of road users and pedestrians, can improve traffic flow and enhance safety by making motorists more responsive to their surroundings. The significant economic advantages are also emphasised, using the example of Poynton in Cheshire. A modern redesign of the village square and streets has provided a multi-million pound boost to local businesses and property values, as well as giving the space back to the people.
