The film was commissioned to demonstrate the ideas and advantages of create a shared space environment and will play a part in discussions of the refurbishment of Douglas Promomenade. Ben Hamilton-Baillie, a respected UK urban design specialist, says in the commentary: ‘The problem many towns suffer is that in trying to accommodate traffic they’ve allowed streets to become so heavily dominated by vehicles those streets have lost their primary purpose as places that attract people, investment and spending.’ Mr Hamilton-Baillie notes that a more integrated design, balancing the needs of road users and pedestrians, can improve traffic flow and enhance safety by making motorists more responsive to their surroundings. The significant economic advantages are also emphasised, using the example of Poynton in Cheshire. A modern redesign of the village square and streets has provided a multi-million pound boost to local businesses and property values, as well as giving the space back to the people.
