Der Name sagt`s: „Octo" ist griechisch und heißt acht. Oktopusse sind also Tintenfische mit acht Armen. Manche Tintenfische haben zwei Flossen, die aussehen wie Elefantenohren. Deshalb werden sie auch Dumbo-Oktopusse genannt. Zur Erinnerung: Dumbo ist der Elefant aus einem Zeichentrickfilm von Walt Disney. Dumbo-Oktopusse leben in Wassertiefen von 400 bis 4.800 Meter und jagen ihre Beute meist knapp über dem Meeresboden.
