Film shows a couple of flights by the 16" rubber-powered dime scale model of the Westland Welkin at Wawayanda on 7.6.20. Designed by Oliver Sand, built and flown by Pete Kaiteris. Dime Scale (16" span max) is one of the earliest forms of rubber-powered scale free-flight, reflecting the simple designs from the 1930s, when most models were made with very little balsa, usually all 1/16" sq. sticks and sheet. Kits cost a nickel or a dime... Todays flyers / designers try to mimic those old designs, but with more current aircraft, such as this Westland Welkin from 1944. Music by motionarray.com.
