September 4, 2016 we had the last match of any kind ever at Chabot Gun Club. The parks department that owns the land decided to not renew the lease of the gun club due to the politics of just a handful of people who had no actual stake in the range operating or not. It's gone now, shut down forever. This match was huge. Normally we'll have 4 relays of 4 shooters. On a big match like the Thanksgiving turkey shoots we'd get 6-8 relays. This being the last match we had 12 relays and had to end up turning some shooters away from running in multiple relays so that everyone would get a chance to compete and shoot for this, the last ever match to be held at CGC. It was a great time. The competitors were there to have fun more than to compete and scores were commensurately low for all shooters. The group pic at the end is all the people that went to put away the targets, clean up and take down the stands that one last time. We left the place like we always do, clean and orderly with everything in its place. Usually we'll get 2 or 3 guys down to help put up the targets. This time there were quite a few more. It was almost a solemn occasion as each man brought one target down to be put in the box for the last time. We're working on setting up a match at a new range but all the possible locations are 90 miles away. CGC was right smack dab in the middle of the bay area and easily gotten to from anywhere in the bay area. It was also the only range with more than 100yrds of distance (200m) for 90 miles. The loss of CGC will have large scale repercussions. Already you can't get a bench at any of the other rifle capable open to the public ranges in the 9 bay area counties on the weekends even if you get there an hour before they open.
