@The Hidden Influence of Vedanta - from Beethoven to the Beatles - a talk by Dharmadas.
The Hidden Influence of Vedanta - from Beethoven to the Beatles - a talk by Dharmadas, given at the San Diego Vedanta Center. This talk traces the impact of the Vedanta Philosophy on the West. From German philosophers, to the Founding Fathers of America, to the Beatles, and Disney. In our modern time, in the mid-1950s Huston Smith, a life-long Christian-Vedantist, taught a 17-weekly series on National Television, as interest in Eastern Religions grew. Huston also participated in Harvard LSD experiments in the early 60s, comparing true religious states with drug-induced states of consciousness. By the 60s, meditation and yoga were becoming mainstream. Years later the Beatles told the world about drugs, and made a trip to India to explore meditation. George Harrison talks extensively about his life-changing encounter with the writings of Swami Vivekananda. https://youtu.be/Nj0M99siznU Joseph Campbell, a Vedantist associated with the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Center in New York, was a scholar of Myths in all the cultures of the world. For a time he was president of the NY center and did extensive work on The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. George Lucas had the idea of Star Wars for sometime, but it was after reading Campbell's work on a "Monomyth" - the tale of the Hero on his journey. And Disney created a plot guide based on Campbell's theories to instruct writiers on how to build a rich plot. All Rights Reserved by the Original Copyright Owners.
