Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was forced to flee a mosque on a state visit to Egypt when a protester took off his shoes and threw them at him, it emerged today. Footage of the incident shows the man, believed to be Syrian, shouting 'coward' as he launches the attack in downtown Cairo. The shoes did not hit the Iranian leader, but showing the sole of your footwear is considered a grave insult in the Arabic world. The demonstrator, who reportedly blamed Armadinejad for 'killing his brothers', was quickly surrounded by security guards as the President was bundled into an awaiting car. The protester was later arrested by police. The scene was reminiscent of the infamous incident when then U.S. President George W Bush was forced to dodge shoes hurled by an Iraqi journalist in December 2008. The protester, who was later jailed for three years, shouted: 'This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!' President Ahmadinejad's visit to Cairo is the first by an Iranian leader in more than three decades and highlights efforts by Egypt's Islamist leader to thaw long, frigid ties between the two regional heavyweights.
