SLEEVE NOTES: "The Trez Amigos" is a team of three talented young men from Malacca of Portuguese descent. They have been friends for years and have always been keenly interested in music. Happily, they preserve for the present and future generations, by medium of their records, some of the delightful Portuguese songs which have been heard in Malacca for the past four hundred years and have been passed down from father to son. Malacca, on the west coast of Malaya, was one of the most famous of the Colonies established in the Far East by the Portuguese. The Trez Amigos have been featured in a production of The Malayan Film Unit which was highly successful especially as they sang not only in Portuguese but in English and Malay. Mr. Horace Sta Maria, a Malacca schoolmaster by profession, takes the harmony and also accompanies the trio on his guitar. He is responsible for the arrangements and has an excellent musical approach. He is manager of the trio and composes many songs. Mr. Horace Sta Maria is a keen Scoutmaster and has been to Australia twice for the Pan-Pacific Scout Jamboree. His music was indirectly responsible for the popularity of the Malayan contingent at these Jamborees. He is known to be one of the best yodellers in our country. Mr. Camilo Gomes, an accomplished singer, was already known as a regular broadcaster before he teamed up with the trio. He sings the melodies and also most of the solos. Another school-teacher, he has been to the United Kingdom and has visited our Head Office and factories at Hayes, Middlesex. Mr. Ernest Rodrigues, a Customs Officer by profession, has not had any real musical training. However, he is a "natural" and sings the bass parts with an accomplishment which is the envy of many other professional singers here. He also takes over some of the solos and, like Camilo, was popular as a soloist over Radio Malaya before joining the trio. "MALACCA GATE" (PORTA DE SANTIAGO) (Gateway of the Bastion of St. James) The only surviving vestige of the famous old Portuguese Fortress, first built by Malacca's famous conqueror, Alfonso de Albuquerque and named by him after the patron Saint of Portugal. He chose for the final attack and capture of the city on St. James' day. July 25th, 1511. This Gateway and the Bastions and fortress walls were built by the Portuguese of local red laterite which, though soft when quarried, rapidly hardens when exposed to the air. The Gateway was badly damaged by the bombardment when the Dutch besieged and captured the city in 1641. According to the report of the Dutch Governor, Balthasar Bort, written in 1678, the Gateway was restored by the Dutch in 1670. The Bastion of Santiago which this gateway served was renamed, Wilhelmus by the Dutch in 1641. The arms of the Dutch East India Company with the date 1670 appear on the gateway.
