Tragically, one of the busiest international shipping lanes crosses the habitat of these endangered behemoths. This causes unnecessary and avoidable excess mortality that is likely to be hard to sustain for this population. The problem can be reduced by slowing ships or moving the shipping lane further out to sea. This is a very simple solution that has been to proven to work in the US where blue whale population started to thrive after implementation. Raising awareness can help accelerate protection of Sri Lankan blue whales that will also be beneficial to local communities who depend on eco-tourism.
