niallon's video: Cry Like A Man Dan Penn - Cover

There's been a lot of discussion these last few years around the subject of toxic masculinity and what exactly masculinity means. Personally, I'm really not fond of the phrase, solely because to me what's being described as toxic masculinity isn't masculinity at all; it's being a straight up scumbag pure and simple and any concept that it has any origin in "classic" masculinity is a learned misconception. Anyways, why am I talking about this? Well mainly it's because only after covering this song and looking up Dan Penn when sorting out the proper accreditation for this cover did I discover that this song was written and released in 1994. Not a million years ago by any stretch but still just before the modern age of acceptance that men didn't have to be "manly". Believe me when I say I'm all for equality and please don't take what I say next as some sort of "our struggles are just as bad as yours" type thing, but the entire concept of men being comfortably emotional is still so alien that it's scary. As the arguments rage on, amongst many others, one of the main outcomes I would dearly love to see is that songs such as this don't need to be such significant stand out compositions.
