niceandgames's video: Qix Atari 8-bit -- Nice and Games

Oh yeah. Almost three years ago I crappily reviewed Qix for the Atari 5200, fully intending to crappily review the same game for Atari 8-bit computers. And I finally have! And it's so crappy! Rejoice in the poopiness. Anyway, Qix. Arcade game. Taito. 1981. Move around coloring in areas of the screen by defining shapes with your whatever you are. Avoid the Qix. And Sparx. And the Fuse. It's a very fun game, though this Atari 8-bit home computer port is not the best, and is in my opinion inferior to the 5200 version. Many 5200 games are just ports from the 8-bit computers, but some are different, and this is one of them. I do kind of like the high-res look of this port, but overall I prefer the 5200 in looks and gameplay. The graphics are lower-res, but the overall look and style actually more like the arcade original than the home computer port. And having two action buttons on the 5200 controller makes all the difference in the world, as you replicate the arcade control scheme. One button for fast draw, the other for slow draw speed. If you are pressing no buttons, you can't draw, but this is essential for being able to move around the lines without worrying about slipping into the undrawn area. That is awkwardly said, but hopefully it makes sense. The home computer controllers only had one action button, which is used to activate slow draw. But this means otherwise you are in fast draw mode, so there is always the chance you will accidentally slip off the line you are on and into the DANGEROUS AREA where the Qix lives. But whatever. It's still fun enough, just not as good as the quite good indeed 5200 port.
