In July 1868 a small group of Bulgarian rebels was surrounded by the Turks on the mountain of Buzludza. After a long fight they refused to surrender and fell fighting. Buzludza mountain has become a symbol of the struggle for freedom. in 1891 the social democratic party of Bulgaria was illegally founded on the same mountain during the anniversary of the battle In 1981 to the memory of the founding of the party was built a monument, now abandoned.
