In 1843 a German botanist exploring the east of Turkey found the ruins of the enormous medieval cathedral. The cathedral still had the dome, some frescoes and inscriptions in Georgian. It was the ruins of the Bana Cathedral built in the 10th century, one of the main churches of the Georgian kings. It was used for the coronation of King Bagrat and his marriage to the Byzantine princess. In the 15th century, King Vakhtang IV and his wife were buried here. In the 16th century area was conquered by the Ottomans. At the end of the 19th century the old cathedral was converted into an Ottoman fortress. During the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 the cathedral was completely destroyed.
