That time a One Lane Tunnel Was Constructed for Cars and Trains The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel often called the Whittier Tunnel was built in the 1940s to connect the port town of Whittier to the Alaskan Rail Network to supply Alaska during the war effort. But as road replaced rail in the minds of the general public it was this same rail service that grew the community and also isolated it. The locals and tourists wanted a road connection to the main Alaska highway network. With the low demand on this route the decision was made to add road traffic to the Whittier Tunnel in addition to the rail traffic making the tunnels operations rather unique.
