They may look like feather dusters, but these 1978 donations to the History collection are decorative plumes that were once attached to costumed headpieces of circus horses. The origin of the circus, a once popular entertainment, evolved from trick horse riding in 18th-century London. The first trick riding show in New York State took place on August 7, 1793, in NYC by Scottish immigrant John Bill Ricketts.
