Douglas Dollar, born in 1944, participated in ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) and received a commission in 1968 for the U.S. Army. He recalls his youth and attending Oklahoma State University for three degrees, a bachelor’s, master’s, and a doctorate. He describes his time in ROTC and his training before going to Vietnam. He details his experiences in Vietnam and shares how his time in Vietnam affected him. Dollar discusses how he became interested in addressing the gaps in military training regarding assisting soldiers emotionally during and after combat. He comments on the challenges returning veterans face and the need for more support for them. He mentions his interest in advertising and journalism and his work with the Oklahoma Military Foundation and News Forums Press. This interview was conducted as part of the Armed Forces in Oklahoma Series of the Spotlighting Oklahoma Oral History Project at the OSU Library.
