Sir Harry Secombe, was a Welsh entertainer with a fine tenor singing voice and a talent for comedy especially noted for his character Neddy Seagoon in the Goon Shows. Dafydd y Garreg Wen was the popular name given to David Owen, a Welsh harpist living in Caernarvonshire in the first half of the 18th century. He composed the song as he lay on his deathbed, it is said he called for his harp and played this tune.
