paulchartley's video: Literally Genesis 47

@Literally Genesis 47
Welcome to part forty seven in this series of videos in which I take the advice of all of those Christian fundamentalists and read my bible - literally You see if you are going to believe in the literal "truth" of the bible and take it literally then literally is the only way that you can read it. In this episode Joseph takes his folks to meet Pharaoh which on the whole goes down rather well even though, as we heard from the last episode, shepherds are an abomination to Egyptians and Joseph's family are all shepherds. But then the famine worsens and people start to ask Joseph for help. What happens next sounds like a GOP budget proposal and is probably where they got the idea. The twenty percent of the crop that Joseph had collected from the people and then stored away so that it would be available during the up and coming famine is not given back to the people but instead sold to them. As Joseph practically has a monopoly on his hands he can charge what he wants and over the course of a year this includes ALL of the money in the country. Now penniless the people are forced to give up their possessions and livestock to pay for food and finally their land and their freedom resulting in Pharaoh owning everything. He then gives them a hand out and tells them to rebuild but he makes it law that everyone now has to pay a flat 20% tax to Pharaoh from then on for him allowing them to farm his land. Talk about bringing a nation to its knees. But then again by the end of the chapter, Egypt isn't the only thing that Joseph has by the balls.
