@LAPD Honor Guard at the Memorial Service for LAPD Policeman James Ellsworth
On September 4, 1917, Los Angeles Policeman James Ellsworth was assigned to the “Speeder Squad.” James was west bound on 6th Street approaching Alvarado Blvd, in pursuit of an individual speeding, when he lost control of his car, skidded of the roadway, hitting a telephone pole at 6th Street and Occidental Blvd. James was killed in the collision. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Evergreen Cemetery. The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation and the Los Angeles Police Historical Society were able to locate Ellsworth’s grave site. The Memorial Foundation subsequently purchased a grave marker. On Thursday, January 24, 2019, a memorial ceremony was held at Evergreen Cemetery when the grave marker was officially unveiled. The Los Angeles Police Honor Guard and a solo piper from the Band paid tribute to James Ellsworth. We have not forgotten you or the sacrifice you made.
