On 5 May 2019, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft returned to Sheremetyevo shortly after take-off. The wings and rear fuselage caught fire after a hard touchdown, and 41 people on board are reported to have been killed. Flight 1492 took off from Sheremetyevo International Airport for Murmansk Airport at 18:02 local time (15:02 UTC).[1] Initial reports have mentioned a lightning strike in-flight.[2] During the flight the transponder code was changed to 7600 (radio failure) at 15:11 UTC and subsequently 7700 (emergency) at 15:25 UTC. It stopped climbing at flight level 090 (9,000 ft, 2,700 m) and turned back, performing a rough circuit to the NE of the airport then carrying out an emergency landing around 27 minutes after take-off, where it bounced, then veered off the runway. All but the forward fuselage was destroyed during the fire. Reports from surviving passengers suggest that a lightning strike may have occurred shortly after takeoff, and crew members said lightning appeared to be responsible for a loss of communication with air traffic control. Russia's Investigative Committee announced that out of the five crew and 73 passengers, 37 people had survived the disaster and that the other 41 on board, including one crew member, had died. During the evacuation, passengers were seen carrying hand luggage off the aircraft after sliding down the inflatable slides.
