@Sook-Yin Lee on Breakfast Television (Citytv Vancouver)
http://yearofthecarnivore.com/ Opens in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal June 18th, 2010. In Vancouver at Cinemark Tinseltown: http://www.cinemark.com/theater_showtimes.asp?theater_id=504 Sook-Yin Lee's "Year of the Carnivore" is a quirky romantic comedy with an unexpected twist. The object of Sammy's affections, scruffy street musician Eugene Zaslavsky (Mark Rendall), happens to think that she is simply terrible in bed. So what's a girl to do? Get better. And so, Sammy Smalls (Cristin Milioti) proceeds to unleash her inner sexuality. In this particular case, practice makes perfect. Meanwhile, Sammy continues to work as a store detective capturing shoplifters. After she delivers them to him, her boss gives them a taste of brutal justice by beating them up so that they don't re-offend. A dodgy scheme that causes Sammy much guilt. Soon though, Sammy finds herself blackmailing shoplifters into giving her sex lessons behind the supermarket. Somehow along her awkward journey she uncovers the meaning behind sex and how it is that we come to understand and learn it. Even though, "This is not the normal way people go about sex," as one character points out. Director Sook-Yin Lee is certainly not shy about broaching sex, having starred in the somewhat controversial film, "Shortbus." Having written, directed and even composed much of the soundtrack for the film, "Year of the Carnivore" is clearly a showcase of Lee's talents, which earned the film its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. "Year of the Carnivore" also stars Ali Liebert, along with comedians Will Sasso and Kevin McDonald. It is distributed in Canada by E1.
