The practice of registering all RTC buses with ‘Z’ has a history that goes back to the first fleet of buses introduced by the erstwhile rulers of Hyderabad. It was in 1932 when the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, bought a fleet of vehicles for public transport and started the State Transport Department. According to noted Hyderabad-based historian MA Qayyum, the department was launched with a fleet of 27 buses made by Albion Automotive — the former Scottish automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer. “The Department released the buses for public use with a vehicle registration number that incorporated ‘Z’ in honour of Zahra Begum, the Nizam’s mother,” he said. And the practice still continues. In fact, historians say, when the last Nizam handed over his reigns to the Government of India, one of the conditions he put down was that this tradition be continued. “This practice has never been discontinued since the first bus was given a registration number with Z,” said Qayyum. Only two of the original Albion buses, bought in 1932, are around now. One is on display on the premises of the RTC Bus Bhavan at RTC Crossroads while the other is parked outside the Vijayawada Central Bus Stand. There are a few buses operated by RTC with registration numbers that have other alphabets, but these are not owned by the Corporation. “Those are the buses that are privately owned and hired by us for use in public transportation,” GV Ramana Rao, Managing Director, TSRTC, said. Nizam State Railways - Road Transport Division Nizam State Rail & Road Transport Department (N.S.R-R.T.D) is a wing of Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway in the former Hyderabad State. It is the first Road Transport Department to nationalize passenger Road Transport Services in the year of 1932. The last Nizam Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII handed over the (N.S.R-R.T.D) to the Indian Government and he made an agreement that every bus number should include the letter Z, as the letter ‘Z’ in the number plate represents Zahra Begum, mother of Nawab Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII.[2] On 1 November 1951 it is renamed as a Department of Hyderabad State Government and later formed as APSRTC in 1958.[3] Road transport corporation in Telangana State was first established as NSRRTD (Nizam State Rail & Road Transport Department), a wing of Nizam State Railway in the erstwhile Hyderabad State, in 1932, with 27 buses and 166 employees. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) was established on 11 January 1958 in pursuance of the Road Transport Corporations Act 1950. Consequent upon bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh state into Telangana and residual Andhra Pradesh, TSRTC operated as a separate entity from 03.06.2015. The Government of Telangana has subsequently established Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), on 27.04.2016, under the Road Transport Corporation Act, 1950.
