Old Movie Watching with Rob's video: Renegade Trail 1939 - Moview Review

Gabby Hayes "windy" has been made marshal of a small town, and he's just as goofy as a marshal as you'd expect him to be. Meanwhile, two scheming baddies plot to rip off the Widow Joyce (played by Charlotte Wynters), but not before we cut to the King's Men who sing us a mellow cowboy tune. The Widow Joyce is soon visited by her ex, Bob Joslin (Russell Hopton), who is just a creep. So it seems that even though she told her son Joey that his dad died in the war, alas, his dad was actually just this guy, serving time in prison. He arranges with the widow to get some clothes and an alibi that pretends he's her brother. Hoppy and Lucky (played by Russel Haydn) arrive in town, and there's a brief scuffle with Hoppy and a baddie, and then the widow Joyce faces off with Hoppy about damage he accidentally caused to her molasses. Yeah, it's a Hopalong Cassidy film so those kind of things happen. There's more silliness and Hoppy and Lucky bring Windy a gift of a new gun. Meanwhile, the baddies are scheming, and, yep, it's cattle rustling they have planned. Stealing cattle from the widow Joyce. It wouldn't be Hopalong Cassidy with some cattle rustling. Lucky and Hoppy help with some cattle driving, and Hoppy has a chat with the young son of the widow lady about doing the right thing and so on. The kid soon falls off a fence by some cattle and hurts his leg so Hoppy bring him home. While he and the widow lady are treating him, the creed Bob Joslin shows up. Hoppy is on to his schemes and orders him get out of town. The baddies continue with their devious schemes, however, and manage to return when Hoppy is gone and lock up Joyce in a shed. They also shoot Lucky (again!) I think he was shot in the last Hopalong film I saw too, but it's all good. He usually recovers pretty fast from that kind of thing. Anyhow, Lucky is off via chuck wagon to recover, and Hoppy heads off too, accompanied by the singing cowboys. Great stuff. Lucky's wagon arrives at the widow's house, and there's a shootout. Joyce and Lucky try to make an escape but they are apprehended by the baddies again. So it's up to Hopalong and Windy to save the day. Can they stop the evil intentions of Joslin and his crew? Well, check this one out to see. Renegade Trail was a fun film. Nothing too deep, and always good to see the trio of William Boyd as Hoppy with Gabby Hayes as Windy and Russel Haydn as Lucky.
