@Da Cruz (2/3) - Vienna, Austria, July 2nd 2011 (Fernwärme Wien Jazz)
Live at "Fernwaerme Wien" Concert. The delightful and energetic rhythms of Brazil transform the listeners of Mariana Da Cruz far away from the clichéd carnivals, bikinis and samba-plumes to the urban and still romantic part of the tropical country. A choir and Bossa nova singer, Da Cruz has been performing at the clubs of São Paulo and Lisbon, Portugal, where she absorbed the influences of fashionable European electro and traditional Fado music. Multi-influenced, yet connected to her roots, Da Cruz develops the sound of a fresh, summery and compelling pop. The artist Da Cruz, full name Mariana Da Cruz, a Paulista with bahian roots started (after the typical church-choir career) to sing Bossa Nova and MPB in the rather obscure clubs of Campinas/Sao Paulo. The caprices of life wafted her to Lisbon/Portugal, where she strolled between Fado-cellars and Electro-clubs, between Portuguese melancholy and fashionable progression and became the musically attraction of an Irish pub at the port of Lisbon. There Mariana Da Cruz met the Swiss producer Ane H. who was -- with his band Swamp Terrorists -- one of the pioneers of Electro-Metal, toured the world from Japan to Brazil in the eighties and nineties and released ten records during these decades. He was looking for a singer to start a new project and he was instantly attracted by this voice. With his mobile studio Ane H. returned to Lisbon for some test recordings, but soon they decided to work on a complete album in Switzerland. Da Cruz was born. Expanded by the guitar player Oliver Husmann and the percussionist Adrian Christen Da Cruz retired on a Swiss alp for some months to work on the songs and the sounds. Until today they recorded produced and pre-produced 20 songs, on four of them, they had the pleasure to work with the drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, who was the pulsemaker of Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Girl From Ipanema") and jointly responsible for the greatest hits in the history of Brazilian music. Da Cruz merges Brazilian music with styles like Electro, Latin, Breakbeat or Global Pop -- without falling in some well-known clichés. "Finally we make Pop music", says Mariana Da Cruz. "Transglobal, electro-acoustic Pop with a Brazilian soul and a heartbeat as precise as a Swiss clockwork. And if you listen well, you even hear some Swiss cowbells in the background."
