Today at The World Championships in Spain, we will watch the individual all-around final. It’s hard to believe that it was 30 years ago when I competed in the Individual all-around final at the 1993 world championships in Alicante here in Spain. I’m feeling nostalgic as many memories come flooding back. It was my first major senior competition and I did not understand how the competition worked. As the third ranked Canadian in a low grouping, I did not have a clue that it even existed…let alone that I would have a chance to make it. I had a fractured ankle and other injuries at the time and I remember crying when I was told that I would need to compete again…CLEARLY, I did not understand how incredible and special it was. The crowd in the finals was something I have never forgotten. The Spanish people were so positive, encouraging, supportive and LOUD! They gave their energy and love to every single gymnast…I felt no pain - just elation! After that event I thought all senior events, or at least worlds would have that kind of energy, but over time I learned how special this Spanish crowd was. Being back in Spain for a World Championships 30 years later, I have to admit that I feel a bit like Peter Pan…observing from a distance as my friends/ex-competitors/colleagues do important and serious jobs judging/organizing/announcing/coaching... as I sit in the stands with sparkling eyes and beating heart, delighting in the magic of our sport and in the incredible experience of this crowd.
