The Roman road overlooking the sea, connecting Albenga to Alassio is one of the most romantic historical naturalistic way in Liguria. It 'a section of the Via Julia Augusta, which was built between 13 and 12 BC by Emperor Augustus, to connect Rome to southern Gaul. In pursuing this ancient road you are immersed in an incredibly beautiful landscape, between the Mediterranean stain and the sea, with the vision, along the way, of the Gallinara island , so named by the Romans for the presence of wild hens. According to legend (scholars, however, seem to confirm it) on the island took refuge in a cave facing the open sea, St. Martin, bishop of Tours. Even today this cave bears his name. Along the way there are the vestiges of the Amphitheatre (there are long stretches of walls, with traces of frescoes, relevant to the amphitheater, built on an embankment, then occupied by a cemetery) and the Roman necropolis of Albingaunum, dating back to the I-II century. A.D.
