This is an informal look at Gear Head Works Model 2 pistol brace. - It is not a rifle stock. Please consult the manufacturer for a copy of the ATF letter (Technology Branch to Gear Head Works) stating when used as designed this pistol brace is just that - a pistol component. It is a pretty neat design. Using a proprietary buffer tube, it appears to use standard carbine/M4 style collapsible buffer spring and buffer. This is good. Should you face an informal inquiry by local law enforcement who are not quite up on the latest, you can display the - not a rifle - buffer tube. You know, to head-off any misguided claims the Tailhook Mod 2 is just a different shoulder stock. ATF says it isn't. What would also be wise, is to have a copy of Gear Head Works BATFE Technology Branch approval letter wrapped in plastic and stuffed up the pistol grip. I do this with a copy of the SBR's paperwork. I plan on doing the same with this pistol build. I don't know if I repeat myself or not, but since the introduction of the Sig Brace, I think it was, ATF has been perfectly "government clear" on the subject of shouldering a pistol somehow constituting "making or remaking" an SBR/NFA regulated item. I understand there is a new personal opinion issued by the Technology Branch which says something like "sporadic" and "intermittent" anchoring a pistol is acceptable - or perhaps - currently not seen as a criminal offence. I suppose that will stand until the next administration installs a new batch of folks at the ATF. My advice, get an SBR if you want one. Get a pistol if you want one of those. Get both! The onus is on you to obey the national, state and local laws.
