-Part 2 (of 3)- Charles Colson December 15, 1972 034-092 White House Telephone President Richard Nixon talks with his aide Chuck Colson about a variety of topics soon after Nixon's 1972 re-election. The two men discuss a recent reception held for labor union leaders, whom they consider their type of people. Nixon recalls how his wife and daughter Julie noted how nice these blue-collar workers were. Nixon briefly compares the reception with President Andrew Jackson's opening of the White House to regular Americans. Nixon and Colson talk about these blue-collar folks as "the new majority." Colson suggests that the "bitches" in the press would prefer to see "the beautiful people" instead of the common people, but Nixon notes about these labor leaders, "the president likes them and they like him." To the amusement of both men, Nixon recounts his discussion of new Secretary of Labor Frank Fitzsimmon's opinion of progressive labor leader Harold Gibbons (3:22). The president recounts how "Fitz" exclaimed "F*ck 'im" about Gibbons since Gibbons did not support Nixon. The two men also discuss the final election tallies (Nixon wanted to beat Lyndon Johnson's landslide margin) and the appointment of Italians and Poles to positions in the Nixon administration, including John Scali as UN ambassador.
