@Cheddar At Last Part I,' Arrival and Walkabout'..A small window of good weather for camping--lucky
Well after quite journey of having to catch different buses to get to Cheddar I did eventually arrive. The WSM 126 bus no longer exists--so I booked a 'Westlink' Minibus service to Axbridge( absolutely no replacement for the excellent old 126 bus) .There is a 'Missing Link' from Winscombe--there is NO BUS from Winscombe to Axbridge or Cheddar and the Westlink Minibus will not cross the Mendip border.......The alternative a £20.-00 Taxi for a 6 minute ride to Cheddar--SO I got dropped off at Axbridge by Westlink which was empty--I was the only passenger on a 16 seater and there was NO timetable link up either SO I had to wait 45 mins to get another bus to Cheddar( I was carrying my camping gear)...It was hot and sunny while I waited at the bus stop hoping this bus would arrive...BRING BACK THE 126..... .It has been 10 months since I have visited Cheddar--a gateway for all my walks---I use to be out here 3 times a week NOW 10 months so I decided I needed to camp over Cheddar to enable me to savor my beautiful walks on the Mendip Hills,on top of the Cheddar Gorge with magnificent views. But aware that it is not easy to get to Cheddar anymore, if relying on public transport, without having to walk the extra miles from Winscombe or pay at least £20..for a Taxi--At 71 I am not alone in needing a good reliable bus service--I am a keen hiker and need a bus to get to the hills and I do miss my own transport but I have a bus pass and use it but the buses are disappearing....BRING BACK the 126......On my return journey after my camping stay was by Taxi to Winscombe and then the No51 bus to WSM--You have to get your timing right because the 51 bus service has large gaps in the timetable and you could end up waiting a good 2 hours for a bus--not fun in the Winter months especially... Anyway folks after setting up camp I have a wander, a walkabout--it seemed strange camping in this so familiar place and walking about like a 'holidaymaker' because I feel like a local--a Somerset girl who knows this place blindfolded---anyway soon I will be walking a good 9 hour hike on my hills as shown in the other videos to follow and of course recorded many times over the years on You Tube--many hikes......I really hope the Somerset local councils can sort this 'Missing Link' out because over 11,000 people signed a petition when we were told the 126 nus service was going to be axed and that is only the people who knew about the petition... Apologies for poor quality and zoom and sway moments but I had to bring a smaller and a much more inferior camera than my Kodak or Sony cameras ---I had to consider the weight on this occasion because of carrying camping stuff but in other videos I do use one of my smaller Sony cameras for video--The videoing will improve folks..7 more videos to follow of Day 2 --the big circular hike including the Gorge, Black Rock, Velvet Bottom, Piney Sleights and Cheddar Wood---better footage as well....Captured for Posterity......
