A licence has been granted to cut down some of the Trees of Worlebury woods & Iron Age Hill-Fort but prior to this and continuing is a frenzy of clearing taking place to expose the archaeology of the Iron Age Hill-Fort at the expense of the Wild-Life that has lived symbiotically here for 200 years plus---the fort is 3000 years old and stands out for miles--a huge feature in the landscape but the Council here at Weston Super Mare and others support the Clearing of the Hill-Fort eliminating trees , shrubs and hence wild-life at a much closer level--ground level which has meant raking, cutting, axing, strimming and chopping the vegetation --shrubs, trees---places where the insects, birds, bats and animals such as deer frequent and live in peace---where people can have quiet peaceful wanders thru the woodland and enjoy the wildness, the flowers, the trees and hear the birds, experience the bats on night strolls --a place of peace , of history, geology and archaeology---But a new element is being introduced under the umbrella of Tourism and Archaeology ---placing our Iron Age Hill-Foot on a level with Stone Henge--a protected site--Around the wood signs have been placed informing the public and visitors that the fort is an ancient site and protected------BUT the irony now is the destruction of Life here-'Destructive Archaeology' by the raking and clearing of parts of the fort , FOR NOW, because in my experience goal posts can be moved and the clearing could extend to much more of the fort------The aim to attract tourists here to experience the naked geology and archaeology which will become exposed to the natural elements and the Human Foot print------------Once the fort is cleared I believe it will be more at risk than ever from humans and the elements-------Like nearby Brean Hill-Fort and the label 'Breezy Brean'-----Worlebury could become 'Windy Weston'---but it won't be a breeze or just wind we will face but the forces of the rising seas,storms and rising tides with Climate Change---The North Wind Doth Blow Here-----We should be protecting the Wild-Life here and engage our community in saving the trees---participating with others around the World who are passionate about saving our Planet---we can all do our part and it starts at Home with our Hill-Fort, our Woods and the Life here......But we have no 'Knight in Shiny Armour, No Shining Star at the moment to guide a defense against those intent on the destruction of the eco-systems here, the habitats here---those who have the Power and Control but not the consent or consensus ---instead hidden small prints and agendas confront the need for an agreed plan of action for the Hill-For and the Life here. This clearing event may seem small compared to much larger global events but 'When A Butterfly Flaps It Wings' as they say.........................................
