Wednesday, June 13, 2018 SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS UNDER STRESS Torben Rick Smithsonian Institute We live on a planet under considerable environmental and social stress and face a mounting set of persistent and complex changes. From climate change to environmental catastrophes and disasters, infectious diseases, food security, and socioeconomic, power, and gender dynamics, human social lives are deeply intertwined with environmental issues. Reflecting on the panels, lightning talks, posters, and discussions, I synthesize research advances on socio environmental systems under stress and highlight gaps in research and potential areas for future engagement. A transdisciplinary approach to evaluating socio-environmental systems under stress that integrates perspectives from the natural sciences with social, cultural, and historical perspectives has much to offer academic discourse, and our ability to transcend societal and environmental stressors more generally.
