Thanaleng railway station is located about 20km (12 miles) from Vientiane. It took less than an hour to get there on a tuk-tuk. The station is not in very heavy use. In fact, my tuk-tuk driver got lost trying to find it. What makes this station special is that it is the only train station in all of Laos. It opened in 2009. Before you can enter, you must clear immigration. Beyond that, there's a waiting area with a small shop inside. The station is not very large. The train itself is comfortable enough. It does not have air conditioning and the windows were open. It took several minutes to get to Mekong river that acts as a boundary between Laos and Thailand. The train travels to the other side over a bridge. On the Thai side, it takes another 10-15 minutes to get to Nong Khai station. There is an immigration area after you exit the train. From Nong Khai, you can take a train to Bangkok, or elsewhere in Thailand.
