Construction of the Shantang Canal (山塘河) began in 825. Since 2015, the scenic area has been a part of National Historic and Cultural Streets of China. The “seven miles” actually refers to “li” or traditional Chinese Miles. The actual length is 3829.6 meters (2.38 miles.) There are seven stone sculptures hidden along the scenic area. They are not necessarily easy to find, but I found them all. The “seven bluestone cats of Shantang Jie” is actually wordplay, based on the Chinese name of the street. It is seven “li” long, and the word “li” resembles a kind of creature, or cat, in Chinese, thus the “Seven Cats of Shantang Street.” Each of the seven cats represent a different form of good fortune: Opportunity, Blessed Fate, Healthy Life, Happiness, Learning, Wealth and Virtuosity. If you’re wondering where is the seventh cat, that area was under construction and I couldn’t get very close.
