This surreal human-made mountain was created by Leonard Knight and is maintained by a group of volunteers. I visited on a scorching hot day in the desert. Salvation Mountain is far from any major settlement, but close to Slab City, another desert location worth visiting. It is estimated that it took over 100,000 gallons of paint to create Salvation Mountain. Due to the toxic lead paint used, the local goverment tried to get the monument torn down. People objected and the site was declared a work of religious art and was left standing. There is no admission fee.
