Explore the birthplace of the maneki-neko. The Gotokuji Temple in Japan houses thousands of them, large and small. 日本の東京にある豪徳寺は招き猫の発祥の地であり、大小とにかくたくさんの招き猫が参拝者を迎えてくれます。 This is a 360 degree video. According to legend, a monk lived with a cat named Tama. Lord Nakaota II of the Hikone district was seeking shelter from a storm when Tama beckoned him and in doing so saved his life from a lightning strike. Today, there is an ever increasing number of maneki-neko at the temple. It is impossible to know just how many there are, as people bring in new ones every day. This place is an actual temple, not just a museum for beckoning cats. I visited on an overcast winter day and there was plenty of construction going on. There is a shop where you can buy maneki-neko and maneki-neko related items. I still have a few from my first visit about 15 years ago. You can visit Gotokuji temple by taking the Odakyu line to Gotokuji station.
