The Step Pyramid of Djoser is about 4700 years old, older than the pyramids at Giza. It was closed for renovations for 14 years, and reopened in March 2020. Egypt has since opened to foreign visitors and I just had to go explore this ancient site. The step pyramid is located in Saqqara, a relatively short drive from Cairo. It is the earliest colossal stone building in Egypt. You enter the mortuary complex through a colonnaded entrance. I walked around before going inside the pyramid. It is truly impressive inside and much easier to move around than at the Great Pyramid of Giza. Also checked out the South Tomb and surrounding areas.
