World's First Airlifted Hospital: Arogya Maitri Cube Made by India The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully tested the deployment of the Battle Field Health Information System for Medical Services (BHISHMA) portable hospital at the Malpura dropping zone in Agra on Tuesday. This portable hospital, designed for rapid deployment in emergencies, was air-dropped from a transport aircraft at 1,500 feet using specially designed parachutes by the Air Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE). The hospital, weighing 720 kg, became operational within 12 minutes of landing. The cube-shaped, waterproof structure can treat up to 200 patients and is deployable by aircraft and drones. It includes advanced medical facilities such as an operation theatre, X-ray machines, ventilators, and equipment for blood tests and treating various injuries. The BHISHMA project, announced in February 2022, saw the Defence Ministry establish a task force to develop the portable hospital. Prime Minister Modi introduced the ‘Aarogya Maitri’ project at the Global South Summit in January 2023, aiming to supply medical aid to developing countries during disasters. In January, the portable hospital was used in Ayodhya for the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Modi. According to a senior IAF official, the Rs 1.50 crore project underscores India's commitment to improving emergency medical response infrastructure. Each unit includes a generator, stretchers, modular medical equipment, medicines, food supplies, and utilizes solar energy and batteries for enhanced sustainability.
